Patricia Edwards Obituary

Patricia Ann Edwards peacefully departed this life, taking the hand of Jesus in the early morning hours of Thursday, March 7, 2024. In the realms of heaven, Patty reunites with her husband of 57 years, William O. Edwards who she married on October 9, 1948. Born to Arthur Harrison Thornton Green and Paula Devereaux (Robinson) Green on, February 17, 1931. She is also preceded in death by her sons, William A. Edwards and Brian L. Edwards, and grandson, Sanquan L. Evans. Patricia grew up in the 8th Ward on Mt. Auburn Street with seven siblings. Losing their father at the age of four, the family experienced hardship, shaping her strong will and perseverance, and fostering a loving closeness with her siblings. In 1996, Patricia concluded her dedicated service at Willow Haven Nursing Home and subsequently retired. A lifelong member of Union Baptist Church, she was fully active for many years; singing in the gospel choir, directing the children’s choir, attending bible study, and being a member of the Sisters of Ruth women’s auxiliary, where she donated her time cooking for many fundraisers. Additionally, she was a member of the former Wanda Morgan Club, participating in their many community events and programs.

Patricia had a knack for telling humorous and captivating stories, a gift she owed to her mother. She would sentimentally share stories with her children and grandchildren, about her life growing up and the special times and lives of those in the 8th Ward. Affectionately close with sisters and brothers, Patricia and her siblings threw weekly card parties that often turned into fun family get-togethers for cousins. She often mentioned that it was her mother-in-law, who taught her some of the favorite dishes, passing down recipes, such as her chicken pie and chicken croquets. Other past times she enjoyed included going to bingo, and more recently, the casinos.

Endearingly known as Mom, Grandma Patty, G’ma, and Aunt Patty, Patricia's 93 years of life were undoubtedly a blessing to her family and friends. Patricia was the essence of love, laughter, and lessons, creating a sense of warmth and hospitality for everyone. Grandma Patty/G’ma expressed a profound love and compassion for her grandchildren. A supportive and attentive cheerleader, who always had a listening ear, she was a present force. Whether playing along with their cars, wrestling figures, video games, building forts and tents, or adding her creativity to school projects, she was all in.

Being the last of the Elite 8, a title encompassing her and her siblings by their children, Patricia lovingly embraced being the matriarch for the Green side of her family. She cherished her role as beloved aunt to numerous nieces and nephews, also endearing herself to all who knew her.

Patricia is survived by her children, Arthur Harrison (Laverne) Edwards and Nancy Ellen (Ray) Edwards-Grady, as well as her grandchildren: Christina M. Jackson, Patricia M. Edwards, Jackie Edwards Newton, Arthur H. (Ashley) Edwards Jr., Adrienne Laurén Edwards, Harrison T. Grady, and Morgan G. Grady. Her legacy continues through her great-grandchildren: Lauren McKee, Ja’Nae Edwards Newton, Jadan Edwards Newton, Jahmya Edwards Newton, Kalon Jackson, Jerzey Newton, Josiah Newton, Autumn Edwards, Harper Edwards, Braxton Edwards, Novie Edwards, and Avah Edwards. She is also survived by her beloved sisters-in-law, Dolores (Robert) Nutter, and Esther (David) Green, and many cherished nieces and nephews.
