Gabriel Raleigh Weatherspoon, Sr.

Gabriel Raleigh Weatherspoon, Sr.,  89, of Zanesville, Ohio passed away Sunday, May 17, 2020 at 6:10 p.m. at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Gabe was born February 7, 1931 to the late Henry J. and Flavia (Pendleton) Weatherspoon. In addition to his parents, Gabriel is also preceded in death by Jackie MacMorris and Connie Hill. 
Gabe leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife, Evelyn Weatherspoon, whom he married on May 25, 1957; his beloved children, Carmen Rogers, Gabriel Weatherspoon, Jr., Aaron Weatherspoon and Jonathan Weatherspoon; 7 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters, Hortense Jones and Marion Flowers; and a host of other family members and friends.
Gabriel was a graduate of Lash High School, in Zanesville. After graduation, he fought in the Korean War as part of a tank crew.  He ultimately married, and earned a position as firefighter on the Zanesville Fire Department. He was the first black firefighter on the department.  He will always be a hero to his son Jonathan. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be deeply missed. 
You may call on the family Friday, May 22, 2020 from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m., funeral service to follow at 2 p.m. at Burrell Funeral Services. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery.Please be advised that per CDC recommendation, guests will be asked to wear a self-provided face covering. A maximum of 50 mourners will be permitted.
