Marlene Virginia Merrigan, 82, passed away on Friday, December 18, 2020 with devoted loved ones by her side. She lived her life as a person who loved Christ, and was extraordinary in showing others compassion, mercy and love. Many received her love never even knowing her, as she moved about often blessing people anonymously. Marlene was a Christian, but is better described as a real life disciple of Christ. Marlene was born on October 30, 1938 in Zanesville, Ohio to Anna and John Peterson. She is preceded in death by husbands Leo Newell and William Grubb; along with her son, Richard Newell; and her brother James Esmont.
Marlene is survived by her children, Donna Foster (Rick Foster), Crystal Maples (Derek Maples), Isabella Merrigan, James Newell (Joshua Romero), David Newell, Robert Newell (Christine Newell), Billy Conaway (Cheryl Conaway), Mitchell Rice, daughter-in-law Shana Newell, the wife of her deceased son Richard; brothers, Richard Peterson (Linda Peterson), Larry Esmont (Pat Esmont); and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Marlene was known for her style in her home and her personal dress. She was most often seen in a fresh pressed white blouse with a popped collar. She had a great love for travel and wasn’t afraid to pull up stakes for a new adventure. She was a multi-talented business woman comfortable at the helm of a variety of businesses from hair salons, restaurants, and gift shops. She was creative and smart but never above rolling up her sleeves and doing the difficult work.
What mattered most to Marlene was family. Her greatest pride was that which she held for her children. She was deeply committed to family and showed her concern for family until the very end of her life. She will be missed. Per the family's wishes, cremation has been chosen and no services will be observed at this time. BURRELL FUNERAL SERVICES is serving the family.
